External Proxy Servers can't select them
« on: February 22, 2003, 02:47:42 PM »
I am on NTL cable in the UK where they use Inktomi proxy caching servers. These seem to cause more than their fair share of problems. They seem to have several for any particular town /city. The default one that I get is often slow and unreliable. If I change to any of the other local ones in Internet Explorer then my browsing speeds are often dramatically improved. This of course means that I bypass the caching done on the SME which I did not want to do. It also means that I would have to change every machine on the network. I changed the external proxy setting by going to configure this server and set the right port number but it still defaults to my default Inktomi server. I know this is happening because if I go to www.showmyip.com it tells me which proxy is being used. Is there something I am doing wrong when setting this or is there another way of achieving this. I am using the final version of SME 5.6

TIA

Just after posting this my local caching server stopped responding. I should have said that I have checked squid.conf and it has the line in
cache_peer 62.253.32.8 parent 8080 7 no-query default

I have tried both the ip address of the cache servers as well as the name.

I have now resolved this problem. I was expecting this to work using transparent proxying but I need to set my clients to the ip address of squid and port 3128 and all is well.
