HELP SAVE A SME SERVER !!!
« on: March 06, 2003, 11:40:20 PM »
Ok i have e-smith box here at work and my boss dont like it... He would like me to change it for a stock redhat 7.3 install to keep a certain unity in the server room (or closet we have 4 server 3 redhat and the e-smith) but i like the little bugger and i save me a lot of time... So this server runs 5.0 with all the patches (i know , i know) but i have limited time... So now i want to upgrade to 5.6 and before i do i want to back it up to a desktop machine (i back up the content with a FTP script normaly) The machine is a Proliant 3000 with two 36.4 Gig hard drives in raid and i got 11 Gig in use. The web interface tells me that the back-up will be around 9 gig. When i start the back-up things go great untils it reach 3,99 Gig where it just say it still downloading but it stays there forever. I have try different desktop computers and i have try to let it go over night and it still hang at 3,99 Gigs. If i dont comme up with somme thing fast my boss is gone have the SME server ass... So help me how to back-up the data but also the accounts...

Move your files over to a local machine with SSH.

You could try to get the backup down to under 4gigs by moving off ibay files to a PC using Samba.  After the upgrade, just move the files back.....

You can use http://www.dungog.net/sme/howto/backup.php to exclude the ibays as well. You'd still need to copy them somewhere else to save them, but this at least lets you limit what is backed up...

There are many threads here about the file size limitation you have experienced (do a search on 3.99Gb for example, all dates).
It is inherent in various packages limitations that are used in sme and there is not much you can do about it.
Try Backup to workstation (Backup2ws rpm), as it can split the backup file into specified size chunks (ie for copy to CD), but this may also overcome the 3.99Gb problem.
