remote file transfer
« on: March 08, 2003, 03:26:05 AM »
I carelessly forgot to install kermit on a new e-smith server, and now I'm miles away...

I can access it with putty ( ssl ) but I need to upload/download some files and I disabled FTP !

Is there something like kermit already on the server?  I've used kermit for years, and it works very well, even has server mode for unattended dumps, etc!  but I'm open to suggestions

thx

I can't find any indication that putty handles file transfer in the putty how-to

the little I find says to use putty with command line ftp, which (ftp) is of course disabled, or I could use my browser!

perhaps there is a command line solution to enable ftp?  I looked for an httpd.conf file but not on e-smith !

Why not use ssh to login then use lynx to access the e-smith control page IE
lynx http://192.168.1.1:980

Display is only text basied but will allow you to re-enable ftp etc.

use putty as described and you can access your server manager and then you can enable ftp access

WinSCP has allowed me to install kermit!

I tried
lynx http://192.168.1.1:980  ( with my own internal IP address )

the navigation was very awkward, I waited 5 minutes at a "wait a moment" prompt, and then the page updated when I pressed enter!  And then I couldn't find my cursor on the screen!

SO I'll be putting WinSCP into the tool box,

thanks all

Go to www.ssh.com their WinSSH app includes filetransfer and is free foe noncomercial use. Very nice GUI looks somting like the latest CuteFTP client. Works like a charm.

use putty to access your server.

login as "admin" and where you will see the console pannel as you are facing you server.

get to the "6. Access Server Manager" there.  Change the setting and logout.

I have been doing this many times, and it is easy.
