ADSL connection problem

Hi All

I am getting errors on a new ADSL connection in Australia. I am using a dlink adsl modem and it connects just fine to my winXP notebook but if I plug it to my sme server 5.5 it fails. The messages files has

.... etc repeating

Using the pppoe query which I think should be valid I get:

# pppoe -I eth1
pppoe: Timeout waiting for PADO packets

I have read widely tonight and cannot find anything that clearly advises what I need to do to actually connect, although it appears that it may be just a setup issue with the appropriate uname/pwd config.

I have tried all options on the sme config for dedicated with static ip, sending ethernet, or sending uname with the same results.

ISP is Primus DSL. Any clues on making this work please.

Hi Tony,

Does Primus require PPOE to login ? Or, is your account a bridged permanent connection account with a static IP ?

Tony, I have a primus account without a d-link & just installed a d-link modem on a telus service, so I may be able to help, send my an e-mail & I'll attach the settings from my e-smith when I get to the office in about 12 hours..

As far as i know its a pppoe connection. At least this is the config in my notebook with WinXP. These settings also include a username and password as for any dial-up networking connection in windows. But since this is not a dial-up from SME's perspective I am not certain what options I should be using. I thought I had tried all combinations but nothing works so I guess I have either missed something or the possibility just occurred to me that the LAN card may be faulty/incompatible in the server.

I have Mike sending me some working config info that I will try and if that fails, I will swap out the LAN cards at the weekend and try some others.

Had this experience with a telstra direct ADSL connection - turned out though telstra maintain that the connection supports both pppoe and ppoa I could only get it working wiht ppoa and hence the dsl modem had to be change to a stadalone modem router (netcom NB1300) with ethernet to the sme. works nicely but would be interested in anyone with sucess with pppoe under these conditions.
However pppoe I have always found works brilliantly with the default sme setup.
