I posted this yesterday as a reply to an earlier thread but did not see my message show up on the forum listing.

I am having trouble setting up a logical printer to create pdf files on a 5.6 server.   I followed Lasse Johansson's how-to (http://e-smith.saxdalen.com/howto/How_to_install_PDF_over_LAN.html ) to install on a server that had recently been upgraded to 5.6. I have installed a postscript printer obtained from adobe using their winsteng.exe utility selecting 'Acrobat Distiller' as the printer. I have done the same on other servers running 5.12 and everything worked fine and continued to work after updating the servers to more recent versions. I have also tried installing various other Postcript printers with the same result. When I print, there are no error messages but nothing appears in the pdfdrop folder either. However, each time I have attempted to print a file is left in the /tmp folder on the server tiltled "FormMagick_XML_XXXXX" where the final X's are numbers. the contents of the file is always:

If I bring up the print monitor for the 'Acrobat Distiller' printer I receive a message reading 'access denied, unable to connect'.

Anyone else run into this? Any ideas?

This is a mail I got from another user out there somewhere, - maybe that's the answer to your problem?

"Hello,

I wanted to thank you and all that helped you ,and also inform you of
what I did.
I installed the PDF Printer on my current version SME
5.6-unsupported-developer-version with only minor changes to your
How-To. My Windows clients are 1- 98SE and 1- ME. What I did was
follow your directions verbatim except I used the  RPM's below. They
are Red Hat 7.3 versions with two additions, I think.

chkfontpath-1.9.5-2.i386.rpm         ttfonts-ja-1.2-8.noarch.rpm
ghostscript-6.52-8.i386.rpm          urw-fonts-2.0-17.noarch.rpm
ghostscript-fonts-5.50-3.noarch.rpm  VFlib2-2.25.6-4.i386.rpm
Omni-0.5.1-3.i386.rpm                XFree86-font-utils-4.2.0-8.i386.rpm
ttfonts-1.0-9.noarch.rpm             XFree86-xfs-4.2.0-8.i386.rpm

All of this went with out a problem and my wife was very tickled to
have her personal documents made into PDF format. "

(Hopefully, that author doesn't mind me sharing his findings in this board...)

I have tried to install those RPM's to be able to print PDF's, but i get the following:

[root@perserver PDF på server]# rpm -Uhv *.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
        /usr/sbin/alternatives   is needed by cups-1.1.14-15.2
        libcrypto.so.2   is needed by cups-1.1.14-15.2
        libssl.so.2   is needed by cups-1.1.14-15.2
        libcrypto.so.2   is needed by cups-libs-1.1.14-15.2
        libssl.so.2   is needed by cups-libs-1.1.14-15.2
        libcrypto.so.2   is needed by ghostscript-6.52-9.4
        libreadline.so.4   is needed by ghostscript-6.52-9.4
        libssl.so.2   is needed by ghostscript-6.52-9.4

What am i missing/doing wrong?

I use SME V5.1.2. Are the RH7.3 OK for that?

No, for SME V5.1.2, the howto at
http://e-smith.saxdalen.com/howto/How_to_install_PDF_over_LAN.html
should be perfectly OK to follow...

In order to clear up some of the current confusion regarding PDF printing and different versions of EES&G/SME, I have upgraded my howto at http://e-smith.saxdalen.com/howto/How_to_install_PDF_over_LAN.html

For users of SME5.6, there should now be a direct link to a much newer howto.

Agreed, I followed your direct link to...
https://www.acenet-tech.org/cdj/pdf-over-lan/install_on_5.6
...and laser printed Craig D Jensen's HOWTO while downloading the files.

Installing the rpm's in the order specified.
At Step/2. it all stops with two dependency errors citing...
/usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir
/usr/bin/ttmkfdir
...I tried manually making those directories using Midnight Commander, but the next attempt at running Step/2. resulted in exactly the same double dependency error:-(

Is there anyway you might be able to unblock this HOWTO problem for my SME5.6 installation so that I can use a PDF printer throughout the LAN?

best wishes, Robert

I realise now that I've been using your linker and that perhaps I should be asking Craig D Jensen for followup advice. Have logged on to his technical help forum and posted a similar thread there...
http://www.acenet-tech.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=26
...but will make sure to append anything that resolves my sorry situation here as well. I'd like to get *on* with this. Also I use W2kPro-SP2 boxes, I understand from the notes that you and Craig would like some feedback on the implementation of the HOWTO etc on boxes other than 95 & 98. When I can get mysefl past Step/2. then I'll be in a better position to help you both out;~/

best wishes, Robert

Sure, I'm actually very pleased to see this developed further.
I have *not* tried to follow Craig's Howto (I really should try it soon, as a matter of fact...) so right now I simply don't know what actually happens.

Also, I realize that my old original how-to suffers from a few broken links and things, - I'll fix this in the very near future.
