No Email Addresses in Some Log Files Whiles Viewing Through
« on: April 01, 2003, 08:11:19 AM »
Hellu,

I am an avid user of PuTTY and have always just used that to view my log files, but today i thought I'd see what I was missing out on and wen to check out my smtpfront-qmail/current log through the "View Log Files" panel, and to my surprise when it was displayed, it contained no email addresses, it was as like they did not even exist in that log, but when I went through PuTTY and viewed the same file using pico all the emails were there.

So I thought I'd try a different browser and used PuTTY to logon as admin and access the server manager through lynx, but alas the same result!

I tryed several different log files, all that were bound to have emails in them, like RAV, stmpfront-qmail, maillog, qmail, and most of them had the same result, or scattered?!?!

This really doesnt bother me as I will just continue to use PuTTY, but I was just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem, I did a search and found nothing.

Thanks,

Cyrus Bharda

My guess is that the addresses are enclosed in angle brackets, which your browser interprets as html tags.  Only a guess, though.

Dan,

But I did try 2 different browsers, IE 6 and Lynx and got the same result?

There has got to be people out there who are using these browsers, and none of them have stubled across this problem before?

Thanks for the suggestiong though, I'll have a look through my browser settings and the like to see what I could find!

Cyrus,

I don't see why the browser would make a difference--if it's processing the log output as html, material between angle brackets would be munched.

You should be able to see if there's stuff between angle brackets that's not showing up by looking at the source...

Dan,

You are right, its there in the source, just not displayed in any browser, netscape/ie/lynx/opera I have tryed them all!

So now we know what is happening I onyl have two questions:

1. How come I am the only person to notice this?
2. Is there any way of setting up browser settings to show these or is there a change needed in the view log files area of esmith?

Thanks,

Actually, it was Bill's idea to look at the source.  Now, what version of SME are you using?  On my 5.6 box, the angle brackets are replaced by < and > in the source, which makes them display correctly.  Perhaps that filtering has been added recently?

Sorry Bill,

Using 5.5u3 with custom rpm's including:

Apache Code Red hits
AWStats
Backup2ws
dialup utils
disk usage
isoqlog
link status
mailfront (Which also installed e-smith-viewlogfiles-1.1.2-02dmc.noarch.rpm)
memtest
netprobe
ntop
qmail queue
RAV
SARG
Squid Auth
squidGuard
Squid properties (Abe Loveless's)
Sysmon
Update-system

My thought is that the viewlogfiles that I installed with the mailfront upgrade to 5.5 has done it, but that is just the only thing I can think of that would change anything to do with this!?

Thanks yet again!

Well, it's possible that Darrell's version of e-smith-viewlogfiles broke this, or it's possible that the version that ships with 5.5 (on which I assume he based his version) just doesn't handle this translation.  I really don't know which is the case, and I'm not sure it makes much difference.  You can try installing the viewlogfiles RPM from SME 5.6; not sure if that one will work on a 5.5 box or not.  Otherwise, upgrade to 5.6, learn enough perl to fix this, or live with it.

OBTW, I'm Dan, not Bill.

Sorry Dan,

I was saying sorry to Bill and meant to address the last post to you, must of slipped my mind :-)

I dont think I want to upgrade to 5.6 I am very happy with 5.5 and it works beautifully, and as they say, if it aint broken dont fix it :-)

Yeah I dont really use this feature anyway, I love my PuTTY :-) it would just be handy for copy/paste type stuff, esp from big log files, that take ages to load up in pico :-)

Anyway thanks a lot for the help, muchly appreciated!!

Works fine on my 5.5U3.

I have 5.5U3 as well. I'm not even sure what all packages I have anymore, as this was a 4.x server, then 5.0, now 5.5. But mine shows the "lt" and "gt" codes in the source (which I think Dan was saying, but posting the actual codes showed the brackets in his post), so I see all the email addresses correctly. Apparently something you've installed doesn't use the lt and gt codes, so it doesn't display as intended.

Bill,

Yeah I think it might be Darrell's viewlogfiles rpm, because that is the only thing that I have installed that directly affects this, I might shoot him off an email to see if it is or not as I do not have a test server around to test it out.

Thanks for your help though!
