Topic: VIM oddity on 5.6

I have 5.6 installed on my test box, and migrated across my .vimrc file from my 5.1.2 production server. When I save a file in 5.6, the number of characters written is displayed on the screen at the prompt, instead of on the line above, as happens in 5.1.2. Thinking it was a setting in the .vimrc file, I renamed it and opened vim again, but got the same result.

I'm no expert so I don't have a clue where to look. IF anyone knows vim well enough to comment, I'd appreciate it.
