Via epia motherboards are very touchy with the quality of the SDRAM installed... You should look this way...
BTW if you card is a 5000 you'll probably have to use a different lan driver than the one supplied with sme, which does not work well with epia 5000. The other models are not concerned by this driver problem afak.

I Installed SME 5.6 on an Epia 5000 without any problems, works a treat! Memory used is Kingston SDRAM.

AFAK, sme 5.5 used to have some trouble with the lan adapter of the via epia 5000, dunno about 5.6 (I'll manage to update when it will be really stabilized..)

I'm installing sme 5.6 on 5 via epai 8000 machines and 1 M1000 based on the results of a previuous install on epia 5000.

If I run into problems I'll let it know.... so you guys can help me out :-)

YFYI,

via epia 8000 reports as a i686 (uname -a) , but installing freeswan, it will only satisfy with the i586 version... not with the freeswan-module...i686.
