Upgrade 5.1.2 to 5.6 questions
« on: April 18, 2003, 12:09:00 AM »
I am getting ready to upgrade my 5.1.2 install to 5.6. The 5.1.2 install is stock with the exceptions of the blades and the IMP 3.0 upgrade and the phpmyadmin upgrade. The only means I have to back it up is to use backup to desktop. My question is this, should I perform the backup and then do a "new" install of 5.6 or do an "upgrade" install. Which is most likely to cause me the least problems? If I do a new install and then restore my 5.1.2 backup will it work correctly (i.e. are the directory structures the same, etc. ). What other issues am I likely to run into? One other issue is that the CDRom in the SME box does not work properly so I plan to do a network install using FTP, am I likely to encounter any problems on that end?  Any and all comments are greatly appreciated!!!

Tom,

If you can always do a fresh install over an upgrade. I would be VERY sure you data is backed up before you try installing though.

I tried FTP install on a machine I have with a broken cdrom but I couldn't get it to work. I'm going to try again over the weekend and I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the reply. I seem to be having trouble with the FTP install also. It keeps complaining that it can't find /tmp/ks.cfg. I know FTP install used to work because that's how I managed to get 5.1.2 on there. Maybe I just need to finally replace that broken CDRom.
