5.6 Installer Crash

5.6 Installer Crash
« on: April 26, 2003, 03:42:18 AM »
I have been runnin 5.2 for some time now, until the hard drive failed that is. Now I am trying to do a clean install of 5.6 on the same system (with a new hard drive). For some reason however the installer crashes freezes everytime just after it flashes "Checking for existing installation". The dialogue box dissapears and all that remains is the blue background of the installer. I am very confused. Does 5.6 have some new hardware incompatiblities that were not present in 5.2?

The system is:
Abit BP6
2x Celerons @ 300mhz each
3Com 905x ethernet card
Some ATI  video controller (pci)
192megs of ram (its rated pc133, and is only running @66mhz)

Anyone have an idea of what could be wrong? I tried making a fresh install CD and even went so far as to download a second copy of the ISO in case the first was corrupted.

I installed redhat 8 (in order to test for faulty hardware) and ran it just fine.

I cant seem to find my 5.2 cd, so if anyone knows where I could download an ISO of it I would appreciate the link. The mirrors dont seem to have it.

Thanks all.

Did you run the MD5 checksum against you're 5.6 ISO to make sure it's good? I've also had lots of problems with even the slightest bit of dirt on my CD making E-Smith or RedHat hard or impossible to install.

yeah, I did. I actually burned multiple cds of the ISO, from different downloads on different pcs, burned with different burners; and the installer crashes at the exact same point.

RH8 of course runs fine... very confusing.

Well thinking out loud ...

SME has a few issues with some 3com nics so use somthing else for now

orrrrr ..

make sure the bios is the latest for the mobo; revison RU (could also try removing one CPU as an experiment)

orrrrr the most likely candidate ..

check the new HDD setup in the bios is correct.  The BP6 has a highpoint controller as well as a standard ATA33 connector so use the ATA33 for the install.  If using the highpoint make sure the ATA cable is rated as ATA66/100.

Just my 3 cents worth :-)

Phil,

During the installation, try checking the other virtual terminals to see what stage the install is at when it's failing. Alt-F2/F3/F4. Collect up as much information as you can, and send it to smebugs@mitel.com.
