I can't speak for what Mitel will or will not do, but I can suggest that there is a solution which is compatible with an unpatched qmail. You'll need a suitable smtp proxy listening on some port on the loopback interface, and configure qmail to use this address as the default smtproute. The proxy will then need to authenticate with the ISP's SMTP server, and otherwise act as a straightforward smtp proxy.
