I can't speak for what Mitel will or will not do, but I can suggest that there is a solution which is compatible with an unpatched qmail. You'll need a suitable smtp proxy listening on some port on the loopback interface, and configure qmail to use this address as the default smtproute. The proxy will then need to authenticate with the ISP's SMTP server, and otherwise act as a straightforward smtp proxy.

True, parking a proxy in front of qmail is one solution; however, the fact remains that qmail is falling somewhat behind the times in several areas. Anytime a package starts to lag behind market requirements and needs a plethora of patches or "little buddy" programs in order to be functional (in terms of current practices) -- that indicates to me either that package needs updating or another solution might be in order.

We are a small ISP.  We don't REQUIRE SMTP AUTH, but we support it.  It is REQUIRED if you want to send mail from an IP address other than our own range of IPs.

Travelling users NEED SMTP AUTH.
