Automating Backup to Desktop
« on: April 29, 2003, 09:04:33 AM »
Hi,
I would like to be able to automate the "Backup to Desktop" function so that I can schedule a daily backup from my WinXP desktop. Is there any way to do this?
Thanks

Mark,

Darrell May has made a neat little rpm that basically does what your asking for, do a search fro Backup2ws or goto here for more information:

Enjoy, I know I do :-)

Hi Cyrus,
Thanks for your help. The Backup2ws function allows you to backup selected directories. What I want to be able to do is to emulate the Backup to Desktop function so that all configuration info, user accounts, etc., are backed up.
Is there any way to do this with Backup2ws?
Thanks

911 backup - you should test a restore though

Mark,

Well as rob mentions, Backup2ws does nearly exactly the same job as backup to desktop, the 911 job that is standard in Backup2ws will backup all config info, user accounts, root dir and if that is not enough then just simply setup another job to backup whatever is not covered in the 911 job.

Couldn't be easier :-), if you have any problems contact me offlist and I can do my best to help you out :-)

does this have that 2gig restore limitation that backup to desktop supposedly has?

Joseph,

Yes and No.

Yes, it does have the same limitation because it has to do with the samba file system limit, it has a limit of 2 GB, believe be do a search on 2 GB limit and you will find very lengthy disscussions on this.

No, it is not affected by this because you can set the size of the backup files in Backup2ws, for instance I have mine set to 645 MB just in case I want to put them on a cd sometime, so I get 5 x 645 MB files in my shared directory after the job is run.

Hope that helps :-)

In backup2ws you can set it to split at 2,000,000 which is just under the 2Gb problem size, and it will work fine,
See

for further info.
do a search on backup2ws (all dates) and you will find a good number of posts about it.

We are using the Backup2ws and have it set to do a custom job.
The part that we are having trouble with is that it we have told it to keep 2 days, but nothing appears to clean up the rars that are older than two days.
Anyone else find this?

Dan,

No I have mine set to 2 weeks, as I do backups weekly and just checked my shared directory and there is only 2 backups in it, all the rest have been cleaned, so it works for me.

Hi,
Just double checked again, two seperate servers, both set to do daily backups of select I-Bays, told expiry 2 days, jobs are saved after creating/changing.
Both servers have an ongoing list of rars for every days backup.

Hi Ray,
It is 14.
I have un-installed it, and aquired 16.
I will see what happens, thank you.
