Update 4 broke my PPTP

Help,

I had 5.6 working with incoming and outgoing traffic after applying the template fix for 10masq_pptp.  Since applying update4, it is broken again.  This is a serious problem...please advise how to restore.  Can update3 be reapplied to replace update4 if necessary?

I am using 5.6+u4 with PPTP and seems to be working well now. Only thing is that it takes almost a minute to establish a connection from a W98 client. Connection has stayed up all weekend.

What problems are you having and what is you client/server configuration?

could it have something to do with this part of the readme:
-------------------------------------------------------
PPTP ppp-mppe kernel modules
----------------------------
The mppe sub-directory contains the mppe kernel modules for all kernel
architectures. The correct module is required to enable the PPTP server
to function.

The SME Server 5.6 CD only contains the i686 kernel variant.

To install the athlon specific kernel module, download
it and then run:

    rpm -Uvh --replacepkgs ppp-mppe-modules-2.4.2-4es.athlon.rpm
    /sbin/e-smith/signal-event post-upgrade
    /sbin/e-smith/signal-event reboot
-------------------------------------------------------

just an idea...

Paul,

Thanks for replying.  Here is my situation.

Before U4, 5.6 at work and 5.6 at home, XP pro is client initiating all connections in this case.  Applied the manual template patch on both machines with U3.  PPTP worked fine incoming and outgoing.   Once U4 was applied, I started getting constant 619 errors when trying to start vpn session.  A reboot or 'services pptpd restart' would correct the problem and allow the connection.  Today, I did the manual template patch again (U4 already installed)....which fixed the 619 error, but now no contact with machines on remote lan.

All SME 5.6 servers are running on Intel PIIIs.  I am considering replacing the ppp-mpppe module as Alex suggests in his posting.  I am also considering installing the SME 5.5 mods, which another user has stated success.

Once issue, I ran U4 with the manual patch...should I have reversed this prior to the U4 install?

Any help is appreciated.

Alexander,
I use Athlon CPUs and have had problems with pptp since 5.6 and have desperately sought a solution. May I ask where this readme reference is and where the Athlon download is for that rpm?

Thanks,
jim

Thanks, Laurence. I missed it when I downloaded the update somehow.

The mppe folder wasn't there when update4 was first released, so its a new part of update4 !!

Thanks, Ray.
Thought I was really careless for a moment. A bit sneaky to slip that in after the update! So the struggle with PPTP continues with more testing this week.

On 5-5-03, after writing my second post, I decided to remove the 10masq_pptp custom template, then re-expanded etc/rc.d/init.d/masq, then rebooted.  This took care of the error 619 and I can talk to remote systems from my home.  I will try this from work to home today.

My problem could have been having the manual custom-template patch applied when I installed U4...since this custom template would not exist on a stock server, maybe this is why pptp works now after U4?  If my pptp is truely working, then it appears the custom template patch should be removed prior to installing U4.

Jim,  thanks for posting the info regarding the different pptp cpu mods...this would have thrown me a loop with future AMD servers.  Does the Celeron work off the i386/i686 mod?

Well, my 10masq_pptp custom template is still intact on 5.6U4, and pptp is working OK from 5.6U4 to a remote 5.5U6 (dial up this end, ADSL the remote end).
Note the template fragment is blank as the original bug fix said, so its what it doesn't do, rather than what it does do. I thought I read somewhere here that the Update4 simply did what the bug fix did anyway.

I note now that there are mppe modules to be installed as well as the original update4 rpms (depending on your CPU type), so this may be the answer for users still having pptp troubles

Good you got to it before I even suggested this!

I am a novice however this was going to be my suggestion as I had just deployed a fresh 5.6w/u4 on both ends and PPTP in the same scenario as your's worked out of the box.

Interesting twist on this...

I get 619 error when conecting from a Natted private IP machine.  If I connect via a public IP, all is well.  I have tried everything in this post, still looking for the right answer.  Any ideas?

There was a recent post that also referred to 619 errors, it appears there is a 2 or 10 minute delay before you can reconnect (after being disconnected), this may be the same issue you are having.
Do a search on VPN or pptp

Ray,

When I was having the 619 error, I was connecting from 5.6 to 5.6.  Interestingly, connections to a 5.1.2 worked fine.  Regardless, removing the custom blank template and expanding the template has fixed my problems.

I have experienced error 800 if I attempt an immediate connection from a different computer on the LAN to the same 5.6 server...after waiting 10 minutes or so, pptp worked fine.  Reconnecting immediately from the same PC works fine for me.
