Topic: upgrade mysql mysql.sock disappears

I am running the latest version of SME server and I wish to upgrade to the latest version of MySQL, PHP and PHPMyAdmin. The last 2 are no issue, but the MySQL upgrade is messing up the MySQL installation all-together. I am relatively new to the linux world and it's my understanding that rather than communicating with the server through a port (memory address), Linux does it through a file called mysql.sock which apparently has a 0 byte size. In any event, while doing the updates, I install the shared-compat, shared, then server and client. There are no complaints but the server daemon shuts down and does not start again. After I install Max, the server daemon starts andallows me to show databases and so forth as normal. I confirm the existance of the mysql.sock file in the path /var/lib/mysql and then I restart the mysql daemon. The service fails to restart, I check through the netstat command to see if it's listening, and check running processes. It's dead and from what I can determain, the service will not start until the mysql.sock is there. Reboots do not help.

Can some genius out there point me the way to do the updates to MySQL or show me the way to repair this?

the only way i can think that you can do this is by re-installing the rpm I remeber having this problem myself where i didnt have no myslq.sock but that was on a redhat machine and like i say i just re-installed JUST the mysql rpms
