external IP address

external IP address
« on: June 27, 2003, 09:42:44 AM »
Two months later the problem continues without a solution, SME 5.6 can´t receive an IP address from my cable ISP.

It seams the thread (see http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=17056.msg66168#msg66168) finished without solving anything. Do I miss something?
meanwhile I´m working with a C-net router but I'd like to change to SME to a configuration as a server and gateway,  not only as a server.

How to solve the problem? SME 5.6 continues with problems to obtain a valid IP address, if I configure SME external Interface to use DHCP (send ethernet address as client identifier) it doesn´t function, however if put a windows box, it always receive a valid  IP address from de ISP but my SME 5.6 not.

I tried to switch the cables, reset the cable modem, but nothing. I call my ISP and He does not tracks the Mac address.

I was looking for an answer at the forum but I didn´t find  a solution to to this problem.

I´ll apreciate any advice, until now it seams no one knows why it happens.

Thanks

Gonzalo

Possible Solutions:

1. Please check your SME lan card may be it was damaged.
2. Manually edit your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-(external interface). Set it to DHCP mode.

What do your log files say?

1. Are you sure the NIC on your SME box is good? Can the SME box connect out? Can other devices connect to it?

2. Even though your ISP's support monkeys may say they don't track MAC addresses they're (invariably badly) trained chimps: Test this for yourself by either swapping NICs or cloning the Win box's MAC on the SME box.

3. What do your log files report? If you can't translate them yourself post short portions of them here.

After read carefully your kind answers I took the NIC this weekend and installed it in a windows box, it function well, I was really confused, then I installed a RH7 and the NIC didn’t function inside the LAN.

I suppose the driver I have is not the correct, it is an D-LINK DFE-530TX and it will remain in the winbox.

In a kind of desperation I bought an RTL8139D and now everything is normal.

About my ISP:
I had to insist with my ISP to reset the connection and let me change the NIC in the computer
The well-trained monkeys that work with the ISP only support technically PC’s with Micro$oft products and refused to help people with other platforms even MAC’s with OS X

I’m grateful for the comments you write

This stupidity can often be bypassed by pretending that you have windoze and that your orginal NIC was killed by a power surge.
How ever you maystill have to do battle with the script that the monkeys follow, it dpends on how well written that is.

Don't worry it is a million times better than if I tried to use your first langauge.  B-)
