Topic: Changing password from the Internet?

Can the users change their passwords from the Internet or only from the LAN? If the latter is the case, can the limitation be overridden somehow?

AFAIK there are two ways users can remotely change their password - ssh/lynx or vpn. I tend to prefer the latter but both of these can be a bit of a challenge to setup initially.

Thank you for your reply.

When I try to access with SSL (using a program called Putty) using a standard user name, a screen says that standard user login procedures have been disabled. There is no problem using the built-in lynx using the Admin account. How are user names remotely changed with lynx without going through tht Admin account?

with a vpn stablished connection any user can change his own password fron anywhere, but with ssh or linx,  remote login of users other than "admin" or "root" is not allowed, so admin/root can change users' passwords via text based browser or via password change procedure but users can't,
A vpn connection is secure enough and enables full funtionallity of remote workstation as it was on the lan.

An interesting idea would be to allow user accounts to login to a console-like system that would provide for changing of their password -- and access to other user-level settings as they become available.

Yes!

Some users use the e-smith server mainly from the Internet, working "on distance". They are not all thrilled by the option of the boss having to change their password for them, if they have to change it for some reason. The simplest way would be to allow https access to the "password page" from the Internet, I guess.
