authenticate before sending
« on: July 03, 2003, 02:28:13 PM »
Hello!

Unfortunatly I cannot send Mails through my ISP because he does not have a open relay Server. Although I have a static IP it is still not liked by several Mail servers, because it belongs to a dial up class.
This means that I cannot use SME (qmail) as my server.

Although I am not happy with the idea of departing from SME Server I do not see a workaround which will happen in the next couple of weeks.

Although I am not a complete newb to linux, compiling source code just flies above my head (I am Admin -no developer).

Mittel knows that this is a problem - see the survey. But there are no plans to change this.

If mittel cannot get permission from Qmail to give a fix out, or if mittel cannot bin qmail and get uptodate Emailserver software then im sorry to say this but ive got to bin e-smith server....

Sad.....

Yours

Your ISP shouldn't have an open relay but they *should* have a relay will accept e-mail from their own net-block.

If they don't accept mail from their own net block how do any of their other users send mail? Those users will also suffer the blacklist/dialup problem.

As I see it it this is not an SME problem but one with your ISP. Complain at them for not  accepting mail from address's within their own net-block if that fails vote with your feet and find a better ISP.

Cheers
Dave.

Hello!

Well my Domain is hosted at Puretec (not a ISP - I used the term ISP to make the problem understandable...). Puretec also has a mail Server and I wish to send my outgoing mails through their server.

I connect to the internet with DSL but not using a service from Puretec.

I hope this clears this misunderstanding.

Otherwise you would be fully correct in your saying.

Your DSL provider most likely provides an SMTP server you can use.

Grrr... If there is one thing I hate it's being given  inaccurate information in a plea for help. HTF is anyone  going to help if they have been given the wrong picture...

Anyway glad you have got it sorted out.

Cheers
Dave.

Actually, we know it is a problem for people using the server on residential ISP
services. ISPs are using all the tools they can in the fight against Spam, including locking down potential open mail relays on their customer sites.

Business ISP connections either allow the relay from known mail servers  or provide an outbound SMTP relay host you can use. Talk with your ISP.

If commercial customers are affected by this problem and are unable to resolve it with their ISP, they should contact Mitel via their reseller.

I have a quick question for Gordon Rowell,

What are the average costs for buying SME's services?  If it helps, I'm near Detroit Michigan, between Detroit and Ann Arbor.

I know there's an info request page on your commercial site but you're collecting a LOT of info and all I want is minimum costs.  Besides, the absolute last thing I need is being on someone elses contact list for persistent sales people.  Spam is bad enough but it can be ignored, my Wife gets 10 to 12 calls a day from sales people now - we don't need any more sales calls.
