Hello!

I have recieved my fair share of help in this forum and I would liket o offer my piece of help back!

I have installed IPTraf - "network monitoring utility for IP networks" found at :-
http://cebu.mozcom.com/riker/iptraf/

Download it -
Unpack it -
run Setup

run iptraf.....

It worked for me without any problems....

What beneifts does IPTraf have over netprobe?

The benefits are :

I dont have netprobe on my server or at least I dont know of it ) Ans as I was searching for a tool of this kind I found IPTraf.


Please beaware that I do not work for IPTraf nor do I know anyone who does!!
Guess Ill have  a look at netprobe

It looks like netprobe shows exactly all the stats that IPTraff does, but through your web browser, also you can export.

The only con with netprobe is that it does not yet store the data, so if you stop it or your server crashes, you lose the data, but they are implementing that in the new beta I am currently testing out, still has some bugs in it though

Well I am looking at net-probe now. when I needed a network tool, I didnt bother looking at these forums first , i searched , found and installed iptraf.

Because it worked well for me, I decided to post here about it.
I do not need a monitor running all the time, I just want to measure some data whenever I feel I ned to test whats happening on my network.

Being able to use the application with a browser is for me no plus becasue I use putty and am able to use iptraf with it.


I do believe though, that it is good knowing more tools can do the job, and that linux also has different program which we can use....

Im not too sure that i like my server being in promiscous mode though.......

Yes no doubt it is great to know of another program that I can use to get the same results!

About promiscuous mode, yes the new beta version has an option not to put the card into this mode, and it works, but as yet is not out of beta unfortunately, but hey whatever works for you is the best solution

If I wanted more I'd run Debian, maybe SUSE.

Oh no, now we have Wars of Distros as subject!

One can interpretate your post to sayinf e-smith is clean, simple and secure but for everything else use a different distro.

Now we only have to define "everything else" and we will know what you miss on the e-smith server.

As a server e-smith gives me everything I need.

I found Npulse very usefull, We use it to monitor Customer Mitel Servers (E-smith) and internal servers.
