Install from MacOSX.. nope! I used RHL

After generating in excess of 30 "coasters" and trying to burn an iso CD every which way, I have decided that the current release of Mac OSX cannot burn a clean iso install CD for e-smith server. This is because the Mac OS inserts some garbage in the file (for identification and icons) that corrupt the pure install file.

I was finally able to successfully install SME 5.6 by the following convoluted process:

1. install Redhat linux 7.3 in my old hard drive, and configure it as a workstation.
2. download the sme iso disk image using the wget feature in terminal mode
3. burn the CD using "cdrecord" on linux

To do this I had to purchase and install a CD burner drive because my server was only equipped with a reader. Cost: $50. Well worth it!!

4. shut down server
5. connect other hard drive
6. boot up using RHL install disk and run fdisk to produce a clean hard drive
7. shut down and boot up with sme-iso install disk

As screwed up as this sounds, it worked!!

Unless and until Apple changes their system to allow for clean burns of iso images, I don't think it's possible to burn an install CD using Mac OSX (Jaguar).

Thanks to everyone for their patience, especially when mine ran out. And thanks for the support!

Hi there,

I have never had any problems creating bootable CD-ROMs of the SME server from Mac OS X. I am currently using version 10.2.6 and only just downloaded the ISO image for SME Server v6 to test and created a bootable CD-ROM no problem. Make sure that when you insert your blank CD into the drive that when OS X pops up and asks what you want to do with it that you select the Disk Copy utility for burning the CD-ROM then you simple drag the ISO image to the utility and kabam - there's your bootable CD-ROM a few minutes later. I hope this helps. If not I would be happy to try help out as many people have helped me out in this forum.

Cheers,

Agreed - I've been burning ISOs for SME Server under OS X for years (ack, has it been that long?) and I've never run into any problems.

As Adam has suggested, you *must* use DiskCopy to burn the image.  You can't simply drag the ISO image file onto a blank CDR in the Finder and choose burn.  Doing so doesn't burn the image to the CD per se, but creates a filesystem on the CD and puts the image file in it ... which is exactly *not* what you'd want.
