Need to change server IP

Need to change server IP
« on: July 15, 2003, 05:49:08 PM »
We are currently on a DSL and have a new T1 installed. I need to move the 5.5 box to the T1 (NEW IP's).
If I just move the old 5.5 box to the T1 I will loose mail (mail and firewall is all we use it for) until DNS washes out. If I put a new 5.5 box on the DSL and set the Delegate mail server to the T1's IP put the old box on the T1 all should be fine, I think.
Any other suggestions or anything I missed.

If you move the 5.5 box to the T1, you won't "lose" mail.  There will be a bit of a hiccup in mail delivery, but anything that fails on the old IP should eventually (within a day or two) be delivered to the new one.

If I change the IP and DNS any mail server that comes up with the old IP will hold that IP looking for the SMTP server then send the mail back after 3 days or so without doing a new lookup for that mail.

If you have 2 sme servers on the web, set one up as a backup mx server and leave it on the old subnet until the mail is delivered to the new mx record.
