There were posts previously in these forums that also touched on this issue.

Wasn't the problem something like that the password files were encrypted for the particular setup/configuration and if you move just the password files it does not work on the new server whereas if you move the whole server setup it's OK . ??

Kelvin, you would probably remember the particular post that covered this.

Hi Ray,

Yes, I do remember the post but it was not confirmed by the powers that be 8-) that this was indeed the case. If it were really encrypted by a key generated by each setup, then the key itself is likely able to be backed up and restored to a new server as well, if we knew what to backup and what relies on that key.

This is the same with NT / W2K servers. M$ never did properly address the issue and so 3rd party software vendors did.

Hi Guys,

Have been playing a bit with the information that is rsynced across. I am trying to elimenate the "data" and only copy across the acounts info etc.

Not knowing how the server actually records account info (ie i know it isnt just a simple case of passwd, shadow, group etc.) it is proving interesting.

So far the best I have been able to do is copy everything bar the data in ibays and users except you need to keep all the directories in these or the accounts are useless.

will keep you posted.

elSpike out.

You'll want to copy /home/e-smith/accounts, and probably /home/e-smith/configuration (in addition to passwd, smbpasswd, etc.)
