ports open sme versus win2000

Hi All,

In the process of trying to win a client away from considering the darkside of microsoft win2000 or server 2003. I'm wanting to send him a port scan comparison of my clients on smeserver against a 'typical' win2000 and a 'typical server2003' running more or less out of the box.

The client is semi technical aware and understands open ports are a bad thing.

My other clients are running e-smith 5.5u6 in private sever-gateway mode with VPNs the only allowed connect.
The nscan of them shows the following ports open:
80     http
1723  pptp

1723 should be open for the VPN, but 80 should be closed or deny or something ?
web browser comes up with (111) Connection refused
Any clues anyone ? Should alter the firewall to block port 80 as well ?

When I get a win2000 port scan and server2003 port scan out of the box
I'll post it for comparison. I know I'm not making fair comparisions between
the operating systems as I'm making efforts to make e-smith secure and
no effort to make the microsoft servers secure. But advertising never relied
much on truth I guess ;-)

Hi Damien,

Try setting the server to Private Server and Gateway. That should close most ports to an external Port Scan.
