I am receiving errors installing HSFLINMODEM*.*.rpm. I will get MD5SUM error, "kernel dependancy" error and / or Batch Error. Even tried source file and gone to the extream of "Install make" off a TAR file. Same thing. I cant install my modem driver for Linux.

Does anyone have a valid RPM/SRPM with command lines to use.
OR...is there a sneaky way of dumping this driver so when SME boots it will see driver and make modem work? This poor programmer has spent 4 hrs on trying to install RPM via PuTTY (logged in as root). Burned almost all HFS....rpms onto CDROM and tried them all...

Isn't life too short to bother with WINModems? Just buy a proper one (IMO).

Someone feel free to jump in if I've got this wrong,

I believe you have very little chance of getting that modem to work with SME in particular, although the ltmodem project has had a lot of sucess getting winmodems working under many linux distributions.

The challenge you face specifically to SME is as follows,

There is no built-in support for internal analog modems, they should be external and connect to a serial port.

The only internal dialup-type card supported is the digital (ISDN) card, a good example being the AVM Fritz. (although it has issues with SME 5.6, requiring expanding modules.conf occasionally for some weird reason or it loses the card definition.)

The only other option for a home user is ethernet connected to broadband/cable, I have also had success using a D-Link DSL 300G+ for this.

Not true. Internal modems which present to the system as a serial port (i.,e. traditional "hardware" modems) work just fine.

"Winmodems" are no harder to get running with SME than with any other distribution - but that's enough to discourage their use. Use a real modem instead.

Thanks for clarifying that Charlie, I haven't personally hooked an analog card to SME, didn't see the point!

Did you notice I solved the problem we were working on with the ISDN card at the turn of the year? Bizarre how adding other modules caused the card settings to be wiped from modules.conf...nothing a quick expand doesnt fix.
