Access internet via serial port connection
« on: August 07, 2003, 06:09:20 AM »
Hi all,

Is there a way to have a workstation (namelly a old Jornada 820 without network card) to connect through a serial port on the e-smith and gain access to the Internet and possibilly network storage?

  A bit like a dial-in but over a direct null-modem cable?

  Any hints appreciated.

I'm sure you already know Chris Herrera's fine WINCE site :
http://www.cewindows.net/faqs/hpcproxy.htm

perhaps that, in addition to :
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/e-smith/contrib/DanielvanRaay/RPMS/e-smith-dialin-0.4-4.noarch.rpm

and possibly :
http://www.dungog.net/sme/howto/dialinserver.php

may all be helpful. If it works, I should say you can consider yourself a 'full-on geek' :)

best of luck,

You may also be able to connect to another windows machine first if you have one on your network: http://www.realvnc.com/pipermail/vnc-list/2001-May/022787.html.
Do you have a USB port? Have you tried a USB-Ethernet adapter? I have seen them for as little as $10 but don't know if they will work on your machine.

Good luck,

No chance, I had a 620lx. These things can take ethernet cards however... with mine I just became part of the network! It was *very* unreliable though.
