Topic: Windows file sharing "access is denied"

All,

I'm getting "Access is Denied" alerts when I save files to a user home directory, or allowable i-bay's using windows filesharing.  However, the files are getting written to those directories.  Is this something simple I am missing at the configuration level?

Client is a Win2k in workgroup mode.  User account and password on the e-smith server are identical to the Win2k login settings.

Also, the browsing of the e-smith workgroup seems really slow (takes several seconds to display the contents of the shared files.

Is this a windows thing, or a samba thing.

What worked for me under the i-bay settings was:
User access via file sharing or user ftp:
 Write=Group, Read=Everyone(*)
Using Samba no problems
After I did that I was able to see all files-Network Neighborhood
Try using chmod on those directories
File sharing doesn't seem slow with 98, not sure with 2000.

If browsing seems really slow the first thing I would look forward is your name resolution. Usually, when you seem to hit some sort of timeout period your best bet would be look at your DNS configuration.  Perhaps your windows client is timing out on DNS and going to broadcast looking for your Samba server. It's worth a look. Secondly, there is a Samba setting called Encrypt passwords. Basically, with NT 4 SP4 and above, Microsoft starting using encryption which Samba couldn't really handle that well. I've found that if your Samba box is handling your Windows user accounts (that is, your Windows users have accounts on the Samba server for file access) then you should set this value to Yes. Try firing up your web browser and typing http://yoursambaserver:901 log in as root (this is SWAT - Samba Web-based Administration Tool), go to General and click on Advanced. Scroll down a bit and you'll see this option.

Are your clients "logon" to the e-smith server ??
If so, the problem might be not having maschine accounts on the server.

There is a rpm in the contrib area (e-smith-trustaccounts-0.1-1.noarch.rpm)
that let you create maschine accounts via the e-smith manager.

My clients ( all WinNT 4.0 SP6a ) doesn't have any problems after
creating maschine accounts.
