Hello,

I have a SME server 5.6U4 with a HP Dat 40 drive (Scsi) here's the problem;

The system loads the SCSI modules at bootup with no errors, but when writing to the tape I get the following error in the log;

Buffer (Writer): write of data failed: Input/Output error
Gzip: stdout: Broken Pipe
Dump: Broken Pipe

Kind regards,
Charles

I have noticed that this happens to me with used tapes (Like tapes that were used on a windows machine first.)

Charles,

Does this happen at the beginning of the dump, or somewhere down the line during the backup?

Also, how old are you tapes?  DDS tapes definitely have a cycle life.  You should try cleaning the drive with a cleaning cart and using a new tape.

*ALL* tapes have a life expectancy. Generally, 50 to 100 uses is the max, depending on how gently you and your device treat the tape, how you store it, etc. So, if you use a tape for backups on Mondays, replace it after 1 year.
