Upgrading 5.6 to 6beta3?
« on: September 04, 2003, 11:17:55 PM »
Anyone do this yet? I'm wanting to try 6b3..but only box I have is our 'live' 5.6 box. :)

There is a client that I am working on rebuilding their system and was wondering if I should throw on 5.6 or 6b3.

Thoughts?

NO WAY, not for a production box!!!  Beta software does not belong on production servers.

It's beta for a reason.  While tempting to upgrade, there are knowledgeable folks at Mitel who have deemed this a beta.  Are you willing to risk the benefits in the beta vs the potential pitfalls?  Think twice!!!

I've upgraded my home box from 5.6 to 6b3, and whilst it runs pretty stable, it still has its quirks. Well, it's at home, so I can live with it, but in a production environment I would say *don't* migrate. Wait for the full release if there's any way you can.

For the most part in my experience with beta software (especially later beta's) they are quite stable and efficient for some production environments.

I'll probably just throw on 5.6u4 for this server being that it needs to be built quickly and since 6.0 isn't out yet officially...

thanks for the info :)

If you have noticed that 6.0b3 is not perfectly stable, and has quirks,
you haven't reported that information to smebugs@mitel.com. Please do so. If we don't know of problems, we can't fix them.

Charlie,

I know. But I also want to confirm my information before submitting it, and am in serious lack of CFT. I could tell you that in my experience tinydns sometimes seems to sleep for a while (ie, not resolve), then is fine again - but I want to check that up with log files and whatever to pinpoint the problem. I still want to research why the partition table on the second IDE hd was gone after upgrading (recreating it meant I still have the data), whether it has anything to do with the installer or was caused by something else. I want to have more data to submit as to why the box wants to call my desktop pc-0004, despite the static MAC-linked DNS entry calling it 'leinster'.

But if you think your dev-folks have enough on data like this, I'll fire up a couple of mails to smebugs with the most pleasure. For I'm positive that 6.0 is shaping up to be the best SME/e-smith to date.

I just installed my first 3rd production 6.0b3 server...actually, I had to install 6.0b2 then upgrade to 6.0b3 with patches as I had problems with a Dell PE2600 CD rom and the b3 image install.  Hmmm...I can't remember if I submitted it as a bug yet...

I have found it to be very...very stable...
