How to add a wireless client to my SME network
« on: September 24, 2003, 09:45:14 PM »
I'm running SME server 5.6 as a gateway / firewall / web server connected to a cable modem, with 3 clients inside. Now I want to enable a wireless client to connect to the network for internet access.  I've purchased a NetworkAnywhere (Cisco) wireless router, which I think I could use as a wireless access point by turning off its DHCP server.

would it be acceptable simply to assign the router a fixed IP in the range served by the SME server, and proceed from there?  I can set up router to only accept wireless connections from specific MAC addresses, and put the MAC address of my Zaurus in that list.

any other tips on setting this up?

thanks

You have it exactly right, using the hostnames panel, give your wireless router a fixed IP, then give the wireless router the internal IP of your SME server as it's gateway address, then just add in WEP.

There has been plenty of debate about the relative security of adding in wireless, personally I believe the combination of MAC filtering and WEP is "good enough".

thanks Guck Puppy, that list bit about the gateway address was a key tip.

The advantage of the way that you suggest is that it doesn't require changing my entire SME server config.
