need help to uninstall public dns
« on: October 01, 2003, 05:52:42 AM »
Hi all,

I installed the public dns contrib and
it caused some kind of a problem
that won't let me create virtual domains.
I also get file not found when I
enter server manager. So I have
to do the fix from the command line
as I keep getting software errors.

Can anyone help me with a how to
uninstall the public dns contrib?

Thanks.

Question:

If I uninstall bind and reinstall it,
will this basically set the named.conf
directories back to their non public dns
settings?

Maybe I'll just try it.

Yes,

I have done some changes and I am getting the
following error message when I attempt to change
the dns settings back to self:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /server-manager/cgi-bin/hostentries on this server.

After making some changes, the virtual domain
I was attempting to create apeared without
my going through the create virtual domain
functions in server-manager.

Thanks for the help.

Update:  I get the above error anytime I use
mydomain.com/server-manager
However, if I use ip.ad.dr.ess/server-manager
I don't recieve any error messages.
Everything seems to work fine.
I would like to get it back to where it
was working with mydomain.com

Thanks.

Normally, you can just remove any reference to any related custom templates then expand the effected template and restart the appropriate service(s).  The online documentation details how to modify/create a template fragment, reverse the process to remove unwanted fragments.

That's one of the best parts of how SME works.  It's still easy to screw up a service by entering invalid options in a config file but removing the invalid options is as easy as telling SME to recreate the appropriate .conf files.

Thanks Dave,

I was off line for the past few days (just fixed it)
because the service was all screwed up.
I built a seconf esmith box and
looked at how the default was
configured. Deleted all the templates
in the template-custom folder
that I didn't want including the
name folder, and issued the
command to rebuild the templates
and restart named.

Due to the fact that win98 has some
incompatability with pppoe, (something
I found out a couple of months after getting
dsl and changing over to a linux distro that
wasn't as easy to set up as e-smith.
sme automatically proxied my connection
for me so it hid the win98's little secret on me:-)
So once the name service was properly configured
I was able to connect to the internet.

In any case, this does confirm the fix even though
I stumbled accross it myself. Either way, thanks
for the help.
