Topic: Kernel upgrade on 6.0B3 to support SATA drives

Hi All,

(Newby question)

I have a system with a SATA drive ( Maxtor Drive with Asus P4P800 ) which works fine under Compatability mode. I can load both SME6.0 & SME5.6 and they run fine.

However to utilize the speed & the RAID 1 I need to upgrade the kernel.
After seraching with Google I found that kernel 2.4.20-20.9 and 2.4.22 are supposed to support SATA.

How would I proceed with the upgrade ? Are these Kernels compatible with SME ?
Can I simply replace the currenct Kernel with the latest RH Kernel ?

You can replace the current kernel with the latest RH kernel RPM(s), but:

- you will lose PPTP VPN capability, as PPTP depends on kernel
  version specific modules
- you may have to hand configure lilo (boot manager). If you get this
  wrong, your system may not be bootable

For normal server usage you may not notice any speed difference in using SATA drivers. I wouldn't bother.

First of all, the "standard" SATA drives now available (such as yours) are not noticeably faster than regular ATA drives. If you buy premium SATA drives (such as the 10K WD drive) and then connect them to a raid controller such as the 8506 from 3ware, you will actually see a substantial speed increase. I've done both, so I can speak from experience. Most of the other SATA products are simply hype.
