6.0b3 Services
« on: October 19, 2003, 05:52:38 AM »
I was just reading / following this thread over here --> http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=18730.msg73859#msg73859  and Charlie's comment reminded me of something I had meant to look into earlier.  With 5.6 someone had created a handy little contrib that added a 'services' panel to the server mgr that could be used to toggle unwanted services on / off.  I installed this same contrib to a 6.03b server that I'm using and while it installed (sort of), it isn't nearly as functional as it was on 5.6.  It shows up on 6.0's server-manager as 'unknown' (or something like that) and a number of services that I'm pretty sure are running (that I don't want to run) are not visible to toggle.  ( Charlie mentioned appletalk in the referenced thread ).

Anyway - anyone know if anyone has created an updated or similar contrib, OR... is it safe to just simply "chkconfig off" services that I don't want to run?

Thanks...

Generally it's better to avoid using anything other than the
scripts and config tools provided by Mitel.  To disable a
service, toggles it's "status" property in the config db,
then re-configure the services.  E.g, to disable mac
file-sharing:

  # /sbin/e-smith/db configuration setprop atalk status disabled
  # /sbin/e-smith/signal-event console-save

Groovy - good information, thanks Paul.

After I posted that, I (just for the heck of it, and to play/learn) went ahead and built up another 6.0 box just for something to explode, and lo and behold, what did I notice (that I apparently didn't on the other one... duh )?  A 'services' option built right into the server-manager!  Aiy!!  Guess what one of the toggle-able options is in there too - atalk.  lol!!

Excellent.  I wasn't aware there was a such a panel.  I'm just in the process now of installing my first unsupported 6.0 server.

I've finished installing - there is no such panel in the server-manager.

??  Hmmmmm.....   I know that I added ~something~ to the other server (that I don't have access to @present) that weirded out on me.  You don't have the services panel??  Have you applied all of the updates for it?  I don't think I have added anything other than the user space web thing for this box here @the house (a toy that I use to play around with).  It does have all of the current 6.03 updates applied too...

See this link here that I just put together:

This is the 5.6 version server manager. The services panel is an add on contrib.  Take a look at the bottom of the opening screen:

LOL!!  Aiy yai yai.... clearly I need more sleep.  I have way to many boxes / projects / 'stuff' going on....  can't keep track of it all.

'k...  I'm gonna go hide someplace for a while and come back after a period of hibernation and (hopefully) NOT look like to much more a schmuck than I've managed to do in just the past few postings....  ( blushing...  what a moron... )

(( I shoulda caught that when I did the screen captures...  !  aiy...  lol!!  ))

To get pre-6.0 contribs to show up in the server-manager correctly simply execute after contrib installation:

# /etc/e-smith/events/actions/navigation-conf

You will receive a scrolling screenful of errors however the end result should have your contrib appearing in the server-manager navigation correctly.

...  I'm not gonna put up any screen shots of versions of software, stick my foot in my mouth, etc...    Darrell - that worked exactly as you said it would.  ;)   Thanks!
