Samba version in 6.03b
« on: October 25, 2003, 01:29:19 AM »
Hi all.

I haven't had the time yet to look into this closely. Would anyone know the samba version in the 6.03b beta?

Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know if the Samba 3.x series will be available anytime soon? I'd like to use the PDC replacement functionality...

TIA,

James...

I too am curious about samba 3, but (and I'm hardly an expert on the subject) the 'PDC Replacement' feature has long been a part of samba going back several versions - always with a myriad of caveats though.  This (smb connections) seems to be one of the last bastions of uncle billies empire that they fight with the samba developers tooth and nail over.  As fast as the samba guys can come up with something to make it work with this or that version of a win OS, the boys in Redmond release a 'service pack' that mysteriously breaks samba servers (again).

In any case.... ( enough ranting ) - NT domains rely on a bunch of propietary dB's (namely user and machine accts) being replicated between each other.  *nixes use other variations for this (NIS, LDAP, etc...)  Again - I'm very curious myself to see / play with smb v3 to see what the smb gang has come up with, but I fear that 'true PDC' replacement (w/out caveats - ie; XP signorseal reg hacks) needing to be employed.

Hopefully everyone will be able to happily co-exist in one happy little camp someday...   ;)

You don't need Samba 3 to get PDC, or more accurately windows domain, functionality.    This functionality exists in samba 2.2; you just don't get all of the bells and whistles that you'd get with a native windows domain.  Samba 3 expands samba's toolset to include more windows domain functions, but by no mean includes all of them.  The biggest advantage that Samba 3 offers is integration with windows active directory.  However, most people running small to medium sized networks don't need active directory, so there is no real incentive to make the leap to Samba 3 right now.

Other than having the satisfaction of knowing you are sporting the newest version of Samba, I see no pressing need to change to Samba 3.  Let it get field test for awhile before making the leap.  SME will handle your network just fine in the short term with Samba 2.2x.

Also:  Not to be overly academic here, but “SMB” is not Samba.  SMB, or Server Message Block,  is a network protocol that I believe was created by Microsoft for printer and file sharing.  Samba simply uses the smb protocol to talk to other SMB clients..

Yup... I knew that, but was being lazy and just didn't type it all in.  Thanks for pointing it out though for those following who may now have known.

I am very well acquainted with the improved AD interoperability though as I stated I want the PDC replacement functionality of Samba 3.x. According to the latest Samba docs and howto's, 3.x is now a complete direct replacement for NT 4 PDC's. It appears that it sort of could do this in earlier versions though not as fully and certainly not as well.

Back to the original question, does anyone know when Samba 3.x will be integrated to the e-smith 6.x server?

Thanks again,
-james
