intranet domain = internet domain
« on: October 25, 2003, 02:49:22 AM »
Hi,

Using 4.1.2 as a dedicated gateway / server

We use say mydomain.net as our intranet domain name (e-smith hosted).  Also we have registered mydomain.net on the www.  We upload our wep pages to a web hosting service as our e-smith box is only used as an intranet web and email server and gateway to the internet.  So far so good.

However problems arise when we need to upload our webpages through the e-smith box to the web hosting service and when we want to browse www.mydomain.net at the internet (and not the intranet version).

E-smith creates hostnames for www.mydomain.net and ftp.mydomain.net.  This means that all requests for www.mydomain.net and ftp.mydomain.net get trapped by the local e-smith server and never reaches the internet.  When I try to erase the hostnames from within the e-smith manager they reappear the next time I view the hostname page.

How can I get rid of those hostnames so we can get the internet www and ftp site and not our own local box...?

Tia for any hints and comments on this

best regards

Well, first, you're using a truly antique version of e-smith, and an upgrade would be highly advised.  However, that in itself won't take care of your problem.  You can't delete those hostnames, but you can tell the server the correct IP address for your externally-hosted www/ftp.

First off, any chance you could upgrade to 5.5, 5.6 or 6.0b3?

In that hostnames panel, when you delete the www and ftp - can you recreate them, and point them to your hosted website IP address?

I know, but if 4.1.2 does what I need and is rock stable I don't see any point in upgrading.  However does it exist a feature comparison grid somewhere between the different versions?

I was sure I had tried that before without success.  However this time it worked.  Thanks to both of you that answered.

4.1.2 is obsolete and cannot be considered secure (Re: intra

A few of the software components have had security vulnerabilities discovered over the years and these can be exploited to compromise/take over your server, and use it to attack others. It's irresponsible to leave unpatched servers connected to the Internet, be they Windows boxes or e-smith/SME servers.

OTOH, if you're certain that 4.1.2 does not have such vulnerabilities, or you are able to upgrade whichever packages have had vulnerabilities discovered,
or can reconfigure the packages so their vulnerabilities are not exposed, then you should be able to safely continue to use 4.1.2.
