pop access from client -> through sme to ISP server
« on: November 03, 2003, 12:47:25 PM »
I am trying to get my pop access to my ISP E-mail.

I am running 5.6 as a gateway server with sites hosted but no E-mail configured, as it is not necesary.

My problem is I installed a fresh 5.6 after having some problems with 6b3, which I could access my ISP's pop mail. Now I get timed out and it never connects.

I can ping the server from the client plus the server.

I have added the IP's to the hosts folder as another thread sugested but to no avail.

any help would be appreciated.

wykyd,

Can you confirm a connection on port 110?

In windows:

start/run  type:  cmd

at command line prompt, type:  telnet   110

should look like this:  telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 110

Try again using your SME internal IP address to see what should happen.

You will see an immediate response if it connects to a mail server.  The cmd box will be frozen, so just close it.  You will get a time out after a long time if the connection fails.

If this works, but your client does not, your problem is likely the client..or possibly firewall software.  I have found Norton firewall to cause issues with POP3 clients.  But since your using SME, you really don't need a software firewall.

I am trying to access with mozilla mail from a slack 9 box.

I must say I have never tried telnet n *nix. But I have a win machine somewhere and will pull it out and try the above.

thanx I will post back the results.
