I have attempted to install e-smith from the Linux Format cover CD twice now.  On both occasions installation has completed as far as the first reboot, then when booting httpd fails and I am faced with the login prompt rather than configuration console.

I suspect the cover CD.

Any other suggestions?

Me too, although I persevered with different hardware configurations trying 4 or 5 times and each results in the symptoms you describe. On a sample of 2 it looks like the cover CD. :-/

Hi folks,

I have 4 systems in active service for over 6 months, so I thought you guys must be kidding..

I put the LXF cd in the box, and lo and behold:  it loads all the software, reboots, and gives me a login prompt.

Since you never got around setting a pwd or user, that seems to be a rather silly situation..

Is this how far you guys got ?

Normally this is the screen that you get, when you have set everything up and running and you choose NOT to auto login..
That way, you have to properly identify yourselves before you can change any settings... (makes sense, right?)

Time permitting, I'll try to see where this one differs form the proper_downloaded_verison...

I tried upgrading the LXF-setup with a 'proper' one, and although I now get my proper console, the configuration does not work.

I haven't got any more spare time today, If I can help you guys by burning a few proper copies, let me know!


(I downloaded the full CD in the days when my ISP still meant it when they said : 24*7 internet access.. Recently it's getting almost impossible to do a big download, so hence my offer..)

OK, I downloaded the "proper version" today (Yes, all 335 MB ) and guess what? It installs and runs as it should. Great!

I'm afraid LXF has done something wrong on their cover CD.

Definitely a faulty cover disk ... and reassuring to find other sufferers!

There does in fact seem to be an offer (elsewhere on the e-smith web site) in which they offer to send you a disk via the post; I have done this and will post back if this works correctly (I am sure it will!).

Looks like an excellent distro so well worth persevering - why does the press still go on about Smoothwall? Much more limited, really hard to extend and seems to ignore dial-on-demand in favour of making you manually start and drop the connection. Not kewl ....

Linux Format's site does have a fix posted. I don't remember what it was offhand, but it involves replacing a corrupted rpm.

Installing e-smith from the LXF cd was my first attemt at Linux, thank God you more experienced users have had the same problem.

LXF claim to have a fix for this problem, but cannot post it to their site until it has been tested by e-smith

I don't know whether this works or not but according to the lxf forum you need to replace the following pearl rpm.

perl-5.6.0-9.i386.rpm

This can be found at

by the way you will need to change the root password by booting into single user mode.

Press ctrl - x at the lilo screen to get command line entry.  type esmith single to go to single user mode and when logged in change the root password via the passwd command.

You can then reboot.

Install the rpm using the rpm -u command as normal.

This information is not correct. The console is run
automatically or if you log in as admin (depending on your
settings).

We have now posted a workaround for the faulty LXF CDs:

We strongly recommend any people who installed from the faulty
CDs to re-install using a correct image, or by using the LXF
CD plus this workaround.

There are important post-installation steps which will not
have occurred when installing from the faulty image.
