Unable to access external mail server in with 6.0b3
« on: November 12, 2003, 01:30:48 AM »
Hi, im unsure whether this has been addressed before... I have had a look through the forums to no avail.

My situation is I cant use outlook etc, to get/send email through my ISP's mail server from any of my boxes behind my 6.0B3 box. This has to be a change or something from 5.6 because my setup worked then. I have all of the updates installed and have tried forwarding port 25 etc. You guys are probably gonna look at me and laugh, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You aren't being clear about "I cant use". What happens when you try?

What has changed in 6.0b3 is that all outbound SMTP is captured by the server, and handled locally. This is to make it easier to contain email borne viruses.

If you want all the server's outbound mail to go via your ISP's mail server, then there's a server manager option (SMTP smarthost) to set that. That's probably what you're looking for.

Well I cannot send or recieve email from any box behind the sme box.

I tried telnet to my ISP's mail server and it failed from my windows box, yet worked from my sme box. So its definetly the 6b3.

As for those rpm's, I have tried them, it still doesnt allow any computer behind the firewall to access the ports. (i.e. telnet'ing still doesnt work)

Oh.. im not trying to send via my server... just through my isp from my windows box. I can send email fine from my box, and recieve, though I dont want to have my email forwarded from my ISP to my SME server.

Yep, ive tried those rpm's as you had in your post with no luck.

Done everything you said in that post and it still doesnt allow me to send/receive email from my ISP on my windows box.

It was a clean install of 6b3 with the updates installed. Nothing else was done to it.

Any ideas? Or is there something else I have to do after I install the rpms other than what was written in your post?

I was also having the problem that computers inside my network had not been able to send mail. It was several days before I started getting failure notices to the admin account.

My ISP is earthlink and they recently switched to ASMTP.  Having found this thread I tried setting (SMTP smarthost) to  smtpauth.earthlink.com and that did not work.  Finally I set it to smtp.earthlink.net and for the moment its working.

I was having the relay or appearance of a relay problem also and here is how I managed to work around it with Earthlink.  We are at the moment very dissatisfied with Earthlink so I wouldn't be surprised if this stops working.  As an aside if anyone can recommend an ISP in the Colorado Front Range area I would much appreciate it.

With (SMTP smarthost) set to smtpauth.earthlink.net:username@earthlink.net

With (SMTP smarthost) set to smtp.earthlink.net
Success!  Note that individual machines that are sending email still have their mail apps configured to smtpauth.earthlink.net
