6b3 post update network slowed to crawl
« on: November 14, 2003, 10:39:13 PM »
after installing the latest updates access to ibays on my local network  and intranet pages has slowed to a crawl. Windows says it would take up to 10 minutes to transfer a 5Mb file. I have looked at the logs and can't see anything obvious wrong the sysmon contrib shows no signifcant activity. This is an install only a couple of weeks old. I have added several contribs but all seemed well until after the post update install reboot.

Any ideas of what to do next  that might help me find the problem would be great.

What do you get when you run "ifconfig"? Any errors?

I've still not found the problem but file transfers between pc's on the lan are fast its just the lan site of my SME box that is very slow. Could this be related to changing the lan side ip from 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.1 when I replaced my old server? Maybe the reboot triggered the problem?

Could the problem be related to one of the contribs I've loaded? ( Greymatter, Awstats, Gallery, Netjuke,  sysmon,  phpgedview, indexer) These all seemed to install and work without major probelms.

any clues about anything I could try would be great as I'm at a loss as to what to look at next.

This is something that happened to me when I had Wondershaper installed.
That worked like a charm until an update after summer apparently broke it.
Happened on 5.6 and 6.0.

wouldnt be a wins/name resolution issue regarding the ip address change would it?

have you changed the ip address back to see if it fixes the problem?

cheers

What is the reply to "hdparm -tT /dev/hda" or "sda" for scsi?  Could your IDE controller be to blame for slow write transfers?

Hi again

Its all fixed now but I'm not sure exactly what did the trick. I tried changing the address back and that had no effect and I'm sure it wasn't a hdparam problem. I uninstalled a couple of addon rpms but that didn't seem to have any effect. I fitted a second hard drive with a view to backing some of my data up before doing a complete new install but after I'd copied the data the problem seemed to have gone away? I'm pleased to have Things back to normal but I'm slightly irritated that I still don't know exactly what the problem was.

Nigel,

Try and run /etc/init.d/iptables status

Can you please tell me if this command runs in one go, or if it takes a while before its done.
Many Thanks

Tried  /etc/init.d/iptables status
and it ran ok. 2 very brief pauses in the output but as it's running ok now (see my prev. post) not sure if this is useful. I suspect somehow the configuration was not quite right and eventualy I made a change significant enough for it to rebuild it right.
