Has enyone ever tried a Intel Gigabit (1000MT/8390MT) networkcard in the SME 6?
Does this card work directly or do you have to patch the kernel to get it working.

Hi Mike,

Haven't tried it myself but the authority on PCI drivers for Linux:

http://www.scyld.com/network/index.html#gigabit  (that's Donald Becker ...guess you've seen the name .-) says:
Intel Pro/1000 Gigabit.
Contact Intel directly for the Linux driver for their gigabit card. They have a e1000 driver distributed under license terms that have changed over time.
---
and the RH 7.3 manual even lists "e1000.o"  as the driver module:
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-7.3-Manual/ref-guide/s1-modules-ethernet.html

No guarantees from my side but:  it's most likely recognized out of the box then...

I can confirm that this card is recognized out of the box with SME 6.0.

I the rpm:  e1000-4.4.19sme56.i386.rpm works great on 5.6.  You might give it a shot if you have not got the server up yet.  I can email it to you if it is no longer online.  I can't remember where I downloaded from as it has been about 6 months.

SME5.6 has the driver built in for the Intel 1000MT card, it just doesn't autodetect it.  There's a thread on the forums that discusses how to manually set SME up for this card without installing a new driver.

SME6.0b3 fixes this.  It is autodetected without any issues.
I have used Dell server's with the NIC built in...
PE2600 and PE400SC are two examples.
Addon Intel NICS work as well.

Can confirm this for MSI server barebones (MS-9211) and SME6.
