Upgrade 5.6 to 6.0 question
« on: December 13, 2003, 01:19:37 AM »
I am planning on upgrading my SME servers that have the port opening and port forwarding installed and in use.  Since 6.0 does this out of the box, will the "upgrade" install "move" my port forwards to the new default, or should I remove the port opening/forward rpms before upgrading to 6.0?  I also have an upgraded IMP running.....any suggestions are appreciated.

I think I'd remove that portforwarding RPM.  As for the rest, why don't you try transferring the system via Norton Ghost to a new hard drive, then do the upgrade?  If everything works, fine & dandy; if not, you have the original and you can try, try again.

Thanks for the input.  I do have a test system, but I use g4u instead of Norton.  Works great and is open source.

After reading the 'death of sme' on general forum, I am thinking of holding off on upgrading to version 6.0.  Does 6.0 offer imporved services or usablility to justify upgrading 6 functioning 5.6 servers?  I kinda see version 6 as a temporary thing while the e-smith community decides what to do.  Without RedHat development and support, both 5.6 and 6.0 will not have needed security updates for the rh base.

Can anyone post opinions why the final version 6.0 is a worthy and wise upgrade?

thanks in advance,

For the new install, SME6 is way to go, but for the upgrade from SME5.6, if everything works and settled on SME5.6 already, maybe its not that much advantage.
For myself, I've upgraded (via fresh install)my 5.6 home server (nothing important) to SME6.beta, and now upgraded it to 6.0 final, but for dozens production servers already running SME5.6 I am not pushing upgrades.
If some of them need to be reinstalled one day, then (maybe) I will upgrade at that time. It was the same dilema about upgrade from 5.1.2 to 5.5 and on most servers I've skipped it until version 5.6 proved to be worth upgrading to.

"death of SME" may be birth of new and improved version of server with many options not offered by "officialy unsupported" Mitel's releases. Where is good chance of make this distro much better and worth upgrade to every new release in the near future, you may help to make it happend as well. :-)
