Backup Edge looks ok, but $300 is a ridiculous price for a single server backup solution. At least for what this is bing used for. I just want to have weekly backups burned onto a blank DVD. Nothing spectacular, except it need to happen with the only user interaction being to place a blank disk in once a week. They have a $90 version, but it is for non comercial use, and technicaly my use is in a small family business. This just is not acceptable.

Compared to just about any other commercial backup product, Backup Edge is A-OK. The price you quoted gets you a full version that can write to everything from CDs to the surface of the moon, including, and this is the real killer, autochangers. I know of no other product that can do that at anywhere near the price - the best bit is that the autochanger functions are childishly simple to set up. I wouldn't be without it - but mine is a commercial installation.

Ed,
I appreciate your input. Backup Edge, does look interesting, but for the application we are looking at, $300 is just more than can be put out for this. It really is the whole reason we went with the open source solutions in the first place. If you have any other ideas please let me know.

Thanks,
Chris

Since I have been waiting for a little help on this for some time, I came up with a solution that seems to be working for now. I created a shell script that runs tar and gzip to create a file that mirrors the "Backup to Desktop" command. This file is then sent through mkisofs to create an iso file that is burned a dvd disk with cdrecord. This is ran from a cron job weekly.

The only drawback at this point is that I can't figure out how to get mkisofs to make a iso file bigger than 2gigs. But it does work. I would love to know what ClaudioG is doing to get this to work.

No news on the DVD backup yet?

Hi,

Just bring this topic to the top.  I'm interested like I know a lot of others are about the posibility of a DVD backup option.

Also has anyone heard any news on the WSBackup option that doesn't work on version 6.0?

Thanks,

Craig

Could you publish a few more details please?
- the script(s)
- the cdrecord rpm etc
for those (me!) who have a clean slate to fill and want a mini-how-to list.
TIA Rob :pint:

also Claudio - if you follow this thread,
it is me that has offered to help with the english
in the howto.

I think you might be interested in search for cd-utils in google. There is a SME module available on site.

I use it in a couple of sme servers (5.x), never tested on 6.x but should to work.

If you don´t find it I can send it to you!:)

Good luck!

Hey,

Thee was a post on here not that long ago that said Backup2WS was in Beta for 6.0.  I know it's not exactly what your looking for but it is a good thing. If you have over 4.7 gig's of data then a direct to DVD burner option is no good unless your there to change the DVD's and the media is still not that cheap that you can throw them around like they are CDR's. What I like about Backup2WS it is that you can have your backup images created overnight and then burn them the next day for off site storage.

If you're interested in selective or complete backups to CD or DVD - Try http://cd-utils.sourceforge.net

It's designed to provide a simple solution for automated / command line backup to CD or DVD - as well as a server-manager module for burning CD's or DVD's from your web browser
