One thing I don't like about the e-smith server is that you can only have email addresses on the primary domain.  If you add virtual domains, you can't use email with them.  Am I correct?  Is there a reason why?

Email addresses work from all virtual domains as well as the primary domain ... they don't work in terms of keeping separate users for each domain.

I.e.

If you have a primary domain: primarydomain.com
virtual domain: virtualdomain.com
and create a new user: jim

Then mail sent to jim@primarydomain.com or to jim@virtualdomain.com will both go to that user.

You can't have two separate Jim's - one receiving mail on the primary domain and another receiving on the virtual domain.

It is intended to remedy that in later versions.  I think I wrote a really detailed example a long time back on this topic - you might want to try a search if this reply doesn't make much sense (been here a little too long working on 4.1b3).

I also have been wondering about this.  What if I want email to appear to come from user@virtualdomain.com? I know that I can set that in the email client, but what about in IMP? that just lets you set the reply-to address, not the From address.

The IMP 2.2.4 (shipped with e-smith 4.1) preferences set your From: address, and you can set that to any of the domains handled by your e-smith server. By default it will be your primary domain.
