i just had a hard drive failure on a server with a raid mirror. thankfully, nothing has been lost. am rebuilding the raid with a new drive shortly. (a web interface for managing this process would be nice).

however, it seems that the hard drive was down the last two weeks. it would be nice to have a daemon that monitors the health of the system and then kicks off an email with a daily status report. it should allow you to enter an offsite email address for reporting, multiple email addresses would be better yet.

Not all but some of this is implemeted in MandrakeSoft's recent MandrakeSecurity SNF release (http://www.mandrakesoft.com/products/snf). SNF is, of course, GPL, and this would go some way to bringing its features into e-smith.

I'll also say in passing that although SNF has an admittedly easier task, some features I find really promising (eg. the ability to deny all WAN admin requests by default) and the web admin interface is far cleaner than that of the e-smith manager.
