USB Modem support
«
on:

Connecting an USB modem (Alacatel for example) to the system is very challenging and we have (for the moment) to recompile the kernel and integrate manually lots of rpm to be able to compile the drivers.
Can you do something to help us for the use of this type of modem? (more and more people bying an ADSL pack have got it).
Thank you.
e-smith rocks!

For the Alcatel Speed Touch USB modem, there is a french howto to install it under e-smith/SME without recompilling the kernel :

It will be very difficult for us to do this until Alcatel make their drivers redistributable. At the moment it is only possible to get the drivers directly from an Alcatel website.

Hi Charlie,
I think you should have a look at
http://speedtouch.sourceforge.net/
It is the new home page of the GPL drivers project for the Alcatel Speed Touch USB.
The only problem is that you have to download a non GPL file from Alcatel, but i think you could add the support for that driver and explain users that they have to download the mgmt.o microcode on Alcatel Web site and copy it to a directory on SME.
You could also have a look on what Mandrake does for that modem support.
Amitiés.

I'd switch to e-smith in a heartbeat if it had support for the SpeedTouch. I'm currently using SmoothWall (
http://www.smoothwall.org
) to handle my connection, which only requires you to upload the mgmt.o file and input your connection settings. Unfortunately, it's rather lacking in the kind of features that make e-smith so appealing to me.
The irony is that I'll probably switch to e-smith anyway next March, because by then my ADSL provider should be offering a "wires-only" package that allows me to choose my own ADSL device.
