I'm not sure if anyone else has used Midnight Commander but here are my views.

Midnight commander is a console based file manager like the old X-Tree gold package from the DOS days.

Its an excellent add-in on an E-Smith box, giving a very easy way to copy and transfer files around a system.
You get 2 independant directory lists can you can copy, move, delete files between them very easily.

It also has a built in viewer and editor which adds to its flexibility.

If you use a telnet connection - set the terminal to linux, and all of the function keys will work very nicely - including 'cut and paste' in the editor.

Just do a rpm -i
type 'mc' and use
if you want try 'mc -b' if the colors are too much for you :>

The site I mentioned has full version + source code which might be confusing for 'non programmers' etc

Good summary, except that it isn't an add-on at all--it comes packaged with e-smith, at least with version 4.1.2...

Really...

I wondered why the 'already installed' message appeared.

Shame this little gem was'nt advertised more - it would have been a godsend on some of the configs I needed to do..

Ie.. Its editor is very simple and fast to learn. Easy doing quick changes to web files and seeing the result immediately.
