It would sure be nice if the Readme files in each of the contrib directories in your download section had some useful info rather than all the "Modules in the contrib area of the FTP site are _NOT_ supported by e-smith." notices.

Useful info meaning a description of what the hell the contributed files actually do.

And one warning readme is more than enough - its a waste of everyone's time to have the same stupid thing in each subdirectory as you drill in.

I've been told that its a "it's a file repository not a library of howtos"

Well, no duh!

Can you imagine how much bandwidth is wasted by people drilling down into each folder and opening every readme in hopes of finding some clue as to what the files are for?

When one simple text file somewhere in the root with a short description would prevent all that?

What a waste...

No need to be so sarcastic.  It *is* a file repository, and generally speaking, people who go looking for files in there have been referred from the forums.

At 633 bytes, very little.

Easier said than done.  Half of the directories there are hosted for other people who do *not* have write access to the FTP repository.  The other half are "developmental" RPMs from Mitel staff which change so continuously that maintaining the README to keep what you'd like in there would be a complete waste of time.

Like I said, people who go looking in the contrib directory have generally been referred to there by a message in one of the forums, or they already know exactly what they're looking for.

I think that it is a bad idea to "drill down" through the ftp archive at all. http://www.e-smith.org/contrib/rpm-index/ (which is linked off the main http://www.e-smith.org page - see Contributed RPMs on the right hand side) gives you a good overview, including automatically generated descriptions.

What more were you looking for?
