Like it or not, as a consultant I am often asked to make the login process invisible to end users in small offices ... protest as I might, many people just want their computers to turn on & be ready for them when they come back with a cup of coffee.  I know I can edit the smb.conf template so users can have a null password (though I haven't made it work through a reboot yet) but it'd be nice to have an option in the server manager ... with a popup that says "NOT RECOMMENDED!  You have been warned!" ... for "no password" so that a Windows user could simply autologin.

All agreed.
Not recommended.... but sometimes very useful....

I believe this is achievable at the desktop end (with some exceptions), even if there was a password assigned to an account.

One exception for example is under W2K, you can autologin only in workgroup mode but not domain mode (which was fine in my setup as I only ever need to access a fixed mapped drive from the server).

It's just a major pain in the neck to get the workstations working with no password when the SME box requires a password to login.  I know security is an issue, and I'm all for strong passwords but my clients by and large really don't seem to care about password security within their networks on a day-to-day basis.  Therefore it'd be nice to have the *option* to turn password protection for user accounts off.

Or you can use tweekgui or something like that, is a program that change the windows registry, and you can set the password and autologin to any server, It's still not recommended, but it's anoher way to do it!! It's a freeware, so give it a try!

Why don't you use the autoadminlogon registry edit, to allow the pc's to logon with a password automagically ??
