I really believe it would benefit everybody concerned if there was a publicly viewable bug tracking system such as bugtraq or RT with an interface for developers and users of the product to view the history and states of reported bugs.
Often Ive been told that something weve discovered is known internally. If there was a public interface such as say RedHat have
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/query.cgi, life would be easier IMO.
Take the alpha 5.6 for example, at the moment Im glad when someone posts to devinfo because I wont waste my precious time on something that is already known, and can move on to exercising other features of the product.
There is no embarressment having some bugs in a complex product such as sme, the professionalism in identifying and rectifying these bugs and the transparency of the process is what makes the biggest difference, again IMO.
Cheers
