A bit more hosting minded...

I really like the SME server concept ... though there is some things I really would like if it was changed!

I would like to host several domains ... with the only purpose to save some money ... that is to have my own and some friends domains hosted on my SME server. But when setting up the server I realized that the whole concept is compiled to serve as a small bussiness/project/group server, and not really as a home development server!

Eg. the way of handeling users ... why not just add a group called mydomain.tld, and at the same time add only one account - say called mydomain.tld - for the belonging admin area, from here it should be possible to add users, but only to mydomain.tld, granting them access to mysql and ftp, create subdomains pointing only on content placed under the mydomain.tld root folder or maby a CNAME, and administrate the mail settings for mydomain.tld ... that way the problems with email on virtual domains would be solved, it would be possible to create "real" subdomains ... and the whole server structure would become way easier to oversee.

It would still be possible for the SME server manager to share eg. ibays only alle the users would be idented by the @domain.tld in their usernames!

I know it may sound like a dream, but in my eyes sme server would be a much better dist. if compiled like a real web hosting server, just with the additional functions thats allready there like samba, printer sharing, dns, proxy ... still it would be possible for the SME server manager to create email liste and adding users to groups ... which have nothing to do with the hosted domains!

Sorry for broken spelling :)

best regards

All sound very interesting ideas. I'd love to have a copy when you are finished making the changes! :-)

There are plenty of Linux distributions (plus BSD Unix) designed to be more "hosting" minded.

e-smith is like many Linux distributions, a subset of Redhat Linux, specifically aimed at being a small site gateway with a simple firewall, file server, e-mail and web server.  There are Linux distributions that boot from a single floppy, from Read Only Memory (ROM) and some from a CD-ROM.  Each has a particular specialty.  Routers use it, TV set-top boxes use it, vending machines use it and even a palm style PDA (from Sharp) uses it.

To be compact and fast, e-smith doesn't include X-Windows, KDE or GNOME graphical desktops, and doesn't even have the latest Linux kernel.  But what it does, it does pretty well.

For it's purpose, e-smith is very easy to operate and setup - many times simpler to configure than a full blown Redhat installation.

e-smith 5.5 does indeed support multiple virtual domains - domains that all use the same public IP, and will automatically separate the appropriate Web urls and e-mail into the appropriate domains.  Search the Windows help file documentation as a starting place.

With all this said, does SME 5.1.2 support multiple virtual domains - domains that all use the same public IP, and will automatically separate the appropriate Web urls and e-mail into the appropriate domains.
