Windows 2K domain disappears
« on: December 07, 1999, 08:38:02 PM »
I have E-smith 3.1 installed on a Pentium 75 with 32Meg of RAM and I have a small home network with an external 56k modem installed on the E-Smith server. I also have a Windows 2K RC-1 server on the network along with a couple of Win 95 boxes and a Win 98 box. After I installed E-smith everything worked great even the Samba stuff. I did have some problems with connect scripts but that was because I have a non-PAP ISP. Anyway, after installation my Win2k domain became invisible to all the client boxes. Didn't matter if I had the E-Smith box set as Gateway on the clients or not.
I had DHCP turned of on the E-Smith server and I have only Microsoft Client, IPX, and TCP/IP protocols running on the clients. The Win2k server is only running TCP/IP. Any suggestions?

Thanks and have a Great Day!

Please send Joe some email with a description of the changes. We need to collect information about dialup problems so that we can produce the best solution for the largest number of users. Odd to find a non-PAP ISP. How do Windows lusers manage?

Firstly turn off IPX on the clients if you are not using it for anything. Read the samba documentation at http://www.samba.org/ about master browsers, browse lists etc. Start with the Introduction to Samba (Sounds like Latin American Dance 101 :-)).

Let us know if you solve the problem....

Just my 1 and half cents worth...

An example:
Due due the nature of the international backbone of the CompuServe network, a small bit of scripting is required to start PPP negotation.

Hence... the Windows/Dial Up Scripting tool. It's not flash. It's not much fun. It's a bit of a dog but truth be known it's about as friendly as any linux variation of the theme that I've seen.

Dealing with dialup connections seems to a very very low common denominator amonst OS's. Could this be a niche market just ready for the tapping?

Care to contribute what you ended up with? For the FAQ, and maybe as an option in future?

Perhaps, but there is already plenty on the wish list. And because e-smith is open technology when you get stuck, as you did, there is
still a solution.

If no-one else has suggested it yet, change "domain master" from
"yes" to "no" in /etc/e-smith/templates/etc/smb.conf and /etc/smb.conf. See how that goes.
